Lowry Parks and Open Space
Closure of the 1,900 acre Lowry Air Force Base in central Denver afforded the Cities of Denver and Aurora the opportunity to redevelop the site as a mixed-use community organized around 230 acres of parks and open space. Master plan concepts developed by Wenk Associates, Inc. recall Denver's historic park design traditions, yet incorporate contemporary concepts by integrating formal and natural areas into the park system. The park and open space network includes a multi-faceted sports complex, an entertainment amphitheater, a great lawn, formal gardens, large wetland / natural areas, and biking and hiking trails. The plan envisions four distinct park areas organized around Westerly Creek, a local waterway currently buried beneath runways and proposed to be brought to the surface as a centerpiece of the park system. These areas are: The Great Lawn, the Wetlands, the Fillets and the Sports Park. Wenk Associates has completed design and construction for the Fillets and Sports Park. Design is in development for the Great Lawn while the Wetlands area slated for near future development.
