Rugged grasses and rough-cut stone soften the concrete plaza as students approach a modern campus building.

A split image. The image on the left is a close up image of rough cut stone terraced into a grassy hill. The image to the right has native grasses in the foreground with a stone and concrete plaza behind and mountains in the distance.

A sketch style, hand drawn rendering of turf lawns and bermed landscape weaving in and around the campus buildings.

Stone berms for controlled stormwater, descend a hillside near the dorm buildings.

Turf lawn is framed by native grasses, shrubs, and trees as a typical pedestrian avenue through campus.

A hillside covered in tall native grasses is separated from turf grass by a discrete mow band with the Rocky Mountains in the background.

Alpine Village (UCCS)

University of Colorado - Colorado Springs, CO

A new student village creates outdoor spaces that celebrate the unique campus landscape.

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) expanded resident housing, academic classrooms, and dining facilities north of the main campus by creating a series of linked neighborhoods, including the Alpine Village. Wenk Associates developed site and landscape plans for the new First Year Experience Housing at Alpine Village, which included a new dining facility and added nearly 600 new beds to the existing housing village.

Situated on a steep hillside, the plan creates outdoor spaces celebrating the unique campus landscape features of bluffs, prairies, and arroyos. A road was removed to help unify the village, and a pedestrian spine with adjacent plazas and green spaces knits the new development to the existing campus village. A new gateway plaza and dining terrace feature expansive views towards Pikes Peak and Pulpit Rock. The plan provides a dynamic and visible learning landscape created by daylighting an existing drainage corridor and routing it through a student courtyard, where stormwater runoff is infiltrated.
