Berthoud Arboretum
An arboretum celebrates the agricultural history of a new community park site.
Wenk led the master planning and first phases of construction for Waggener Farm Community Park, which included a recreation center, multipurpose fields, a community playground, a skate park, and court sports, including pickleball. The Berthoud Arboretum, the latest addition to the park, brings a welcomed open space experience for the community.
Working with the Town and the Berthoud community, the project team developed the 31-acre concept plan for the arboretum site that celebrates its agricultural history. The plan features a North Community Hub composed of a fruit orchard, community garden, native perennial garden, picnic shelter and restroom, a tree nursery, crop circle meadow, and interpretive agricultural play features. The South Hub features a meandering trail system that navigates horizontally and vertically through a pine forest, a Gamble oak hillside, native prairie, and wildflower meadow. A high point provides an overlook with expansive views of the Front Range. An irrigation canal and fishable pond serve the arboretum’s irrigation needs.
Wenk is currently working on the project’s first phase of design.
