Sand Creek Park
Aurora, CONatural setting inspires a playground of discovery
The natural setting of the 100-acre Sand Creek Park inspired the original 1996 master plan and the 2014 amendment (both completed by Wenk Associates) that addresses the drastically changed context of the park since the initial plan. Based on extensive public input to preserve the natural setting as much as possible, areas for discovery, playful adventure, and gathering are thoughtfully placed within the existing prairie landscape.
Wenk led schematic design, design development, and construction documentation and provided construction observation services for subsequent phases of Sand Creek Park including the Discovery Playground, Cottonwood Discovery Area, East Pavilion, and West Pavilion.
In keeping with the master plan goals, a playful discovery area is designed to fit within the natural character of the open space, integrating natural drainage elements, landform, and native vegetation that mimics the mature cottonwood forest.
