The Butterfly Effect: How a Colorado Development Became a Pollinator Performance Paradise
In a blog post for LAF’s Landscape Performance Series, Wenk’s Alex Bullock writes about the measured success of incorporating Pollinator Design Guidelines into the new Baseline, 1,000-acre development in Broomfield, Colorado. The guidelines, prepared by Butterfly Pavilion, dictate specific planting strategies that consider plant species, resource spacing, bloom schedules, and pollinator services. Butterfly Pavilion has been observing the effects of the plantings since pre-construction in 2019.
Wenk’s role through the life of the Baseline Project, led by McWhinney developers, includes contributions to the Pollinator Design Guideline document; master planning the development’s parks, open space, and public realm; and the design and construction documentation for over 100 acres of built work.
